Lamarr was born to Emil Kiesler, a bank director, and Gertrud Lichtwitz Kiesler, a pianist. She grew up in Vienna and developed an interest in performing at an early age. After attending school in Vienna, she pursued acting training, including study associated with theater director Max Reinhardt in Berlin.

She began appearing in European films while still young and gained international attention for her role in the 1933 film Ecstasy. In 1937, she moved to the United States and signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where studio head Louis B. Mayer promoted her under the name Hedy Lamarr.
