Matthew Perry, born Matthew Langford Perry on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, was an American and Canadian actor, comedian, writer, and producer. He was best known for playing the sarcastic and quick-witted Chandler Bing on the sitcom Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004. Perry also appeared in films including Fools Rush In and The Whole Nine Yards, and later wrote the memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. He died in Los Angeles on October 28, 2023.
Background/biography
Matthew Perry was the son of actor and model John Bennett Perry and Canadian journalist Suzanne Morrison. His parents separated when he was young, and he spent much of his childhood in Ottawa, Ontario, where his mother worked in Canadian politics and later married journalist Keith Morrison.
Perry attended Ashbury College in Ottawa and became a competitive junior tennis player, ranking highly among players in Canada for his age group. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles to live with his father and attended The Buckley School. His interest in acting developed during his school years, and he began auditioning for television roles while still young.
